General FAQs

Why does this site refer to Black-owned businesses as "BOBs"?

We use the term "BOB" to refer to a much broader scope of entities. Particularly, "BOB" refers to Black-owned, -operated, and -oriented entities including, but not limited to: businesses, non-profit organizations, civic groups, social organizations, professional and trade organizations, and affinity groups.

Are all of the entities listed on this site BOBs?

Yes. In order for an entity to be listed on BOB Rochester, it must be a: privately-held for-profit enterprise with Black majority ownership; non-profit organization where greater than 20% of top management are Black; or civic, socio-professional or trade organization, affinity group or team with Blacks making up greater than 40% of the population served.

We make every effort to verify this information to be true. Users can also assist in this effort by listing BOBs and reporting non-BOBs. For more information, see About.

So I have to ask, is BOB Rochester racist?

Absolutely not! BOB Rochester exists to address the disparities between BOBs and non-BOBs while bridging the gaps between BOBs and consumers. Any person of any cultural and ethnic background, lifestyle, religion or creed is more than welcome to become a registered user on our site. We provide an array of meaningful offerings to satisfy users' expectations and strive to live up to our mission while making our vision a reality. Many of our users are specifically looking to support BOBs and our services make them easier to find.

In addition, America has long been stated to be the land of opportunity where peoples of all backgrounds and perspectives are welcomed. Many special interest or affinity groups exist and work together to establish affinity-centered commercial entities, community-based organizations, educational and faith-based institutions. Some are local or regional while others are national, multinational and at times global in scope and presence. Together, many of these groups and their various contributions make up American society and culture. If we are to truly be an inclusive nation desirous of remaining competitive on a global scale, then ALL interest and affinity groups must be sufficiently supported and represented in the tapestry we have come to know and affectionately regard as the "...Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave."
